Four people died and five others got injured on Wednesday when two big trucks crashed on the road between Ilorin and Bode-Saadu in Kwara State.
Two trucks crashed into each other, resulting in the two vehicles being engulfed in flames as one of them was transporting fertilizer.
The injured parties were immediately transported to the University of Ilorin Teaching Hospital to receive medical attention.
The head of the Federal Road Safety Commission in Kwara State, Mr. Stephen Dawulung, confirmed the accident in a statement on Wednesday.
He said the crash happened around 1:02 pm on the road between Ilorin and Bode-Saadu, and it caused a fire that burned both trucks.
Mr. Dawulung said that when they heard about the crash around 1:09 pm, rescue workers from the FRSC went quickly to the crash site.
They rescued five men who were injured and took them to the University of Ilorin Teaching Hospital for treatment.
From what they found out at the scene, one of the trucks, which was carrying fertilizer and eight passengers, tried to pass another vehicle but couldn’t see the road properly.
To avoid hitting another truck coming towards them, the driver lost control and crashed into another truck carrying tomatoes.
A total of ten people were involved in the crash. Five got hurt, and sadly, four lost their lives.
“A total of Ten (10) persons were involved in the crash. Five(5) got injured while four (4) others sadly lost their lives,” the statement noted.
The fire has been put out, and the road is now clear for traffic to pass smoothly. The head of the FRSC in Kwara State has ordered a full investigation to understand what happened and how to prevent similar accidents in the future.
“The Sector Commander has since directed for a full investigations to harvest information that will guard against reoccurrence.”
