Former Kano Pillars, Heartland United and Lobi Stars defender, Chinedu Ozor, has reportedly died after collapsing during a pre-season friendly in Katsina State on Tuesday.
Ozor, who was recently unveiled as a new signing by Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) side Katsina United, reportedly collapsed in the early minutes of the club’s pre-season match against Niger Tornadoes at the Muhammadu Dikko Stadium in Katsina.
Multiple reports said the incident occurred between the 10th and 13th minutes of the match, when the 30-year-old defender suddenly fell on the pitch.
Club medical personnel reportedly rushed to his aid and attempted to revive him before he was taken to a hospital for further medical attention.
However, Ozor was reportedly pronounced dead shortly after arriving at the hospital.
His sudden death has thrown Katsina United, teammates, club officials and supporters into mourning, coming shortly after he joined the club during the ongoing transfer window.
Ozor had previously featured for several Nigerian clubs, including Heartland United, Lobi Stars and Kano Pillars.
The circumstances surrounding his death have not been officially disclosed, while Katsina United is expected to issue a statement on the tragic incident.
