At least 30 people lost their lives while 70 others sustained injuries in a lone road traffic crash that occurred on Sunday along Hadejia Road at Kwanar Danja, Kano State.
The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) confirmed the incident in a statement issued by the Sector Commander, Idris Muhammed-Lawal.
He said the accident happened at about 8:35 a.m. and involved a commercial DAF trailer with registration number KTG 467 YG, which was carrying both passengers and goods.
According to the FRSC, a total of 105 persons were involved in the crash. 30 persons died on the spot, 70 sustained varying degrees of injuries, while 28 others were unhurt.
Muhammed-Lawal explained that the FRSC received a distress call at 8:35 a.m. and deployed a rescue team to the scene within five minutes.
He attributed the cause of the crash to speeding and loss of control, worsened by the dangerous practice of conveying passengers alongside goods.
The injured victims were evacuated to four hospitals for treatment. Twenty-four victims (17 males and 7 females) were taken to Sir Sunusi Specialist Hospital, Kano, while another 24 victims (16 males and 8 females) were taken to General Hospital, Gezawa. Twenty male victims were taken to Murtala Mohammed Specialist Hospital, Kano, and seven victims (five males and two females) were admitted at Abdullahi Wase Specialist Hospital, Nasarawa.
The FRSC cautioned motorists against speeding and the practice of mixing goods with passengers, warning that such acts significantly increase the risk of fatal accidents.
