The Kwara APC Christian community has appealed to President Bola Tinubu and Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq to ensure fairness, equity and inclusiveness in the emergence of the All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship candidate for the 2027 election.
The group’s spokesman, Rev. Felix Ajide, made the appeal on Monday in Ilorin while addressing journalists on behalf of the Kwara APC Christian community.
Ajide said the group’s recent open letter to President Tinubu was not intended to promote religious division but to advocate a more balanced and inclusive political arrangement in Kwara State.
According to him, the Christian community has made significant contributions to the state’s political development, peace and stability while maintaining cordial relationships with Muslims and other stakeholders.
“Our appeal is not about religion or replacing competence with sentiment. It is about ensuring that competent individuals are given equal opportunities within an inclusive political framework,” he said.
Ajide cited findings from the African Polling Institute (API), which he said showed that Kwarans were prepared to support competent candidates regardless of their religious affiliation.
According to him, the survey revealed that about 90 percent of Muslim respondents expressed willingness to vote for a qualified Christian candidate, while a similar percentage of Christian respondents said they would support a competent Muslim candidate.
He said the findings demonstrated that merit, character and competence remain the primary considerations for voters in the state.
Ajide stressed that discussions ahead of the 2027 governorship election should focus on producing a leader capable of uniting the people and sustaining the state’s development.
He maintained that the APC has several qualified Christian aspirants with the experience, educational background and leadership capacity to govern Kwara effectively.
“Our plea is not a rejection of any section of society. It is a call for fairness, equity and a leadership arrangement that gives every segment of Kwara a sense of belonging,” he said.
Ajide expressed confidence that President Tinubu, whom he described as a leader committed to justice, equity and inclusiveness, would give the appeal due consideration.
He also reaffirmed the Christian community’s commitment to peaceful coexistence with Muslims and its support for a democratic process that would produce visionary and people-oriented leadership.
The group appealed to both President Tinubu and Governor AbdulRazaq to support the emergence of a competent Christian governor in 2027, insisting that such a move would promote justice, fairness, unity and the continued progress of Kwara State.
