17-year-old Hacker Breaches EFCC Chairman’s BVN and Bank Info

The Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) shared an intriguing experience he had with a 17-year-old boy during a recent address to stakeholders.
The chairman recounted how the boy, despite pursuing a history degree without any formal education in science, showcased impressive IT skills during an interrogation session at the EFCC office in Lagos.
During the meeting, the EFCC chairman, Mr. Olukoyede, asked the teenager to demonstrate his internet scamming techniques.
To the chairman’s amazement, the boy swiftly obtained his mobile number, accessed his Bank Verification Number (BVN), and accurately identified the chairman’s bank and account details without any prior knowledge provided by Olukoyede.
“He asked for my number (mobile number), through my number he got my BVN. He now mentioned the name of my account number to me and the bank and I didn’t tell him anything.”
Despite the illegal nature of the boy’s activities, Olukoyede expressed admiration for his IT prowess.
He emphasized the potential for the youth to become a valuable national asset with proper guidance and orientation.
This statement reflects a nuanced perspective, recognizing the underlying talent and the possibility of channeling it positively for the nation’s benefit.
This narrative sheds light on the pervasive issue of cybercrimes in Nigeria, as highlighted by statistics cited from the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) and the EFCC.
The staggering financial losses incurred by Nigerian banks, estimated at ₦8 billion due to cybercrimes alone, underscore the urgency of addressing this challenge.
Moreover, the annual loss of $500 million to cybercrimes further emphasizes the scale of the problem and the need for concerted efforts to combat it.
While his actions are undoubtedly unlawful, they also hint at the untapped potential within the country’s youth population.
By providing the necessary support and guidance, there is a possibility of harnessing these talents for the greater good, thereby transforming individuals like the boy into valuable contributors to the nation’s progress.
