15 Killed, 17 Injured as Trailer Crashes on Ilorin–Jebba Expressway

A total of 15 people have been confirmed dead following a lone trailer crash at the Muslim Cemetery area along the Ogbomoso–Oko Olowo section of the Ilorin–Jebba Expressway in Kwara State.

The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) said the accident occurred at about 2:32 a.m. on Monday and involved a DAF XF trailer with registration number GWL 274 XC.

According to the FRSC, 48 male occupants were involved in the crash. Fifteen people died, 17 sustained varying degrees of injuries, while 16 others escaped unhurt.

The corps attributed the accident to driver fatigue, noting that the injured victims suffered fractures, dislocations and bruises.

Confirming the incident, the Kwara State Sector Commander of the FRSC, Kabiru Babatunde Kazeem, identified the driver as Nasiru Muhammed.

He said the injured victims were evacuated to Arewa Medical Centre and Baki Hospital for treatment, while the bodies of the deceased were released to their families through the Sarkin Hausawa of Oko Olowo in Moro Local Government Area.

Kazeem disclosed that rescue teams were still searching for additional victims believed to be trapped beneath the trailer’s load.

He added that the rescue operation was carried out by personnel from RS8.15 Oloru and RS8.1 Kwara (Oko Olowo Outpost).

The sector commander said the command would intensify public enlightenment campaigns through town hall meetings with relevant stakeholders and urged motorists to avoid mixed loading, driver fatigue and night travel to reduce road crashes.
