14,000 Communities at Risk – NEMA, NIHSA Join Forces to Combat 2026 Flood Threats

The Director General of the National Emergency Management Agency, Zubaida Umar, has held a strategic meeting with the Director General of the Nigeria Hydrological Services Agency, Umar Ibrahim Mohammed, as part of efforts to strengthen inter-agency collaboration ahead of the 2026 flooding season.

The meeting focused on improving preparedness and response strategies following the release of NIHSA’s 2026 Annual Flood Outlook report, which identified about 14,000 communities in 266 Local Government Areas across 33 states as high flood-risk areas.

During the discussion, both agencies explored measures to align emergency response plans, early warning systems and disaster management strategies aimed at reducing the impact of flooding on vulnerable communities across the country.

Officials said proactive steps are being taken to minimise the projected scale of flooding and safeguard lives, livelihoods and critical infrastructure in affected areas.

The renewed collaboration comes amid growing concerns over the recurring devastation caused by seasonal flooding in Nigeria, including loss of lives, displacement of residents, destruction of farmlands and damage to public facilities.
