Borno State Governor, Professor Babagana Umara Zulum, has intensified efforts to secure international operational status for Muhammadu Buhari Airport, following a high level visit to the headquarters of the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) in Abuja.
The meeting, held behind closed doors on Tuesday evening, centred on accelerating the final certification process required to upgrade the Maiduguri airport for international flight operations.
Discussions reportedly focused on addressing technical bottlenecks and ensuring compliance with regulatory standards necessary to obtain the aerodrome license.
Sources familiar with the deliberations disclosed that Governor Zulum also advocated for the establishment of a regional NCAA office in Maiduguri.
The move, according to insiders, is aimed at strengthening aviation oversight, improving regulatory presence, and enhancing operational efficiency across the North-East region.
The governor was accompanied by Engr Bukar Talba, member representing Marte, Monguno, and Nganzai Federal Constituency, alongside other senior officials of the Borno State Government.
The push for international certification is expected to boost economic activities, improve connectivity, and position Borno State as a strategic hub for regional and cross-border air travel.
