Borno State Governor, Babagana Umara Zulum, recently took significant steps to assist Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) affected by the Boko Haram insurgency.
On Sunday, Governor Zulum distributed 447 resettlement housing units, along with essential items like food, mats, blankets, and clothing materials, to IDPs in Dalori community, Konduga Local Government Council.
These houses were constructed by the Borno State Government to provide shelter for families displaced by the conflict.
Moreover, the resettled community in Dalori received additional amenities such as a hospital, school, and water facilities, enhancing their access to basic services.
The beneficiaries were drawn from two locations: 197 households from Kawar Maila camp and 250 families from Dalori town, totaling around 2,500 family members.
Governor Zulum emphasized the government’s commitment to supporting the returnees in starting afresh, mentioning plans to provide agricultural kits and entrepreneurship support for sustainable livelihoods.
Under Governor Zulum’s leadership since 2019, Borno State has made significant strides in resettling IDPs and constructing over 10,000 resettlement houses across 20 locations.
Additionally, the governor revealed plans for the reconstruction and resettlement of other affected communities, such as Dalwa and Sandiya in Konduga Local Government Area.
In a related development, Governor Zulum flagged off the closure of informal IDP camps in Maiduguri, the state capital, on the same day. He stressed the need to transition IDPs back to their ancestral homes to foster self-reliance and community development.
Governor Zulum highlighted the closure of official IDP camps in Maiduguri Metropolitan Council and its environs since the previous year.
He added, “Therefore, we will return them to their ancestral homes so that they can start fending for themselves.”
He pledged to ensure the closure of all informal IDP camps in Maiduguri before May 29, 2024, signaling the government’s ongoing efforts to facilitate the return and integration of displaced persons into their communities for sustainable livelihoods and development.
“Today, we have commenced the closure of all informal IDP camps in Maiduguri, and we will Insha’Allah close all informal IDP camps in the metropolis before May 29th 2024,” Zulum said.
