Zamfara State introduces Community Protection Guards

Zamfara State Governor, Dauda Lawal, recently hosted a gathering of Northwest Governors to officially introduce the State Community Protection Guards (CPG).

The graduation ceremony for the newly trained Community Protection Guards, also known as Askarawan Zamfara, took place at the Trade Fair Complex in Gusau, the capital city.

Governor Lawal’s spokesperson, Sulaiman Bala Idris, shared in a statement that Governors from Jigawa, Kebbi, Kaduna, Kano, Katsina, and Sokoto attended the event.

The statement highlighted the Zamfara State Government’s comprehensive approach to addressing current and future security challenges.

Last year, Governor Lawal approved the recruitment of 5,200 guards across 14 local government areas. The recent graduation saw 2,645 individuals completing their training in the first batch.

Governor Lawal, in his remarks, emphasized his administration’s commitment to gradual reforms across all sectors to bring order and hasten development.

Governor Lawal acknowledged that the ambitious goals set for the state’s progress could only be achieved if the pressing issue of insecurity is effectively tackled.

This led to the establishment of the Community Protection Guards, locally known as Askarawa.

The Steering Committee, responsible for this initiative, extensively screened eligible volunteers across the 14 Local Government Areas for enrollment into the outfit.

The governor expressed a belief that many of the challenges faced by the state and the region stem from neglecting to advance public policies that cater to the socioeconomic needs of the people.

He emphasized the importance of not taking for granted the message conveyed by the people through their votes in March 2023.

Governor Lawal highlighted the significance of the first batch of the Community Protection Guards in contributing to enhanced security and the realization of the broader developmental objectives of Zamfara State.
