Presidential spokesperson Bayo Onanuga has dismissed claims by Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, that the President Bola Tinubu-led administration is frustrating his life and businesses, describing the allegations as unfounded and misleading.
Obi, during a recent interview, claimed he was uncertain he would be alive to contest the 2027 presidential election, alleging that the current government was doing everything possible to frustrate him and his business interests.
Reacting in a statement made available to The News Chronicle, Onanuga accused the former Anambra State governor of habitually spreading falsehoods and attempting to politicise personal incidents.
Referring to Obi’s complaint about his vehicle at the airport, Onanuga argued that, by Obi’s own account, the incident appeared to have resulted from a breach of parking regulations rather than government persecution.
“Peter Obi’s recent claims of being targeted by the government are simply unfounded and misleading,” Onanuga said.
He further described Obi as a “pathological and serial liar,” alleging that he consistently seeks to drag the government into every personal inconvenience through exaggeration and baseless allegations.
Onanuga also dismissed Obi’s assertion that he might not live to witness the 2027 election and that people were being discouraged from inviting him to social events, describing the claims as a fabricated narrative aimed at attracting public sympathy and diverting attention from what he called Obi’s credibility deficit and challenges within his political camp.
The presidential aide maintained that the Federal Government was not targeting any of Obi’s business interests, noting that Fidelity Bank—where Obi reportedly has substantial interests—continues to perform strongly under the current administration’s economic reforms.
According to Onanuga, the Tinubu administration remains focused on implementing its economic agenda and has neither the time nor the inclination to be distracted by what he described as Obi’s self-serving narratives and lies.
