You May No Longer Need Your Phone Number To Use Whatsapp, Here’s Why

—

In a bid to bolster user privacy, WhatsApp is currently testing a groundbreaking username feature that allows users to communicate with one another without the need to share their phone numbers.

Much like the Instagram model, this feature is set to revolutionize the way users connect on the platform.

This development was first spotted by WABetaInfo on the beta version of WhatsApp for Android, and it appears that the Meta-owned platform is now rolling out this feature to a select group of beta users on iOS.

Users will find the option to set a WhatsApp username conveniently located on the app’s profile page.

The username can be a combination of alphanumeric characters along with some special characters, ensuring a wide range of customization possibilities.

It’s worth noting that every username on the platform must be unique, preventing any confusion.

One of the key advantages of this feature is that if someone initiates a chat with a person’s username, the phone number linked to that account remains concealed unless explicitly shared by the user.

This additional layer of privacy is sure to be appreciated by WhatsApp’s vast user base.

Notably, WhatsApp is extending this feature to both individuals and businesses, allowing them to choose their preferred usernames.

Just like standard WhatsApp chats, conversations initiated using usernames will benefit from end-to-end encryption, ensuring the security of user interactions.

In addition to the username feature, WhatsApp is also rolling out a new reply bar feature.

This enhancement will empower users to send images, videos, and GIFs seamlessly while viewing images or videos within a conversation.

These updates come as part of WhatsApp’s ongoing commitment to providing a dynamic and feature-rich messaging experience.
