The Yobe State University Teaching Hospital (YSUTH) has successfully performed a total hip replacement surgery on a young man suffering from avascular necrosis of the head of the femur caused by sickle cell disease.
The landmark procedure, conducted on Saturday, was described by the Yobe State Commissioner for Health, Dr Muhammad Lawan Gana, as a major breakthrough in orthopaedic healthcare in the region.
According to the commissioner, total hip replacement had previously been unavailable in the state, making the successful operation a significant milestone for the hospital and the state’s healthcare system.
The patient, a young man living with sickle cell disease, developed avascular necrosis, a condition in which the blood supply to the head of the femur is disrupted, leading to the death of bone tissue and severe hip problems.
The specialised surgery was led by Dr Lawan Musa Yari, with Dr Musa Abdulmalik, Dr Bashok Palagvi, Mr Manasseh Jonah and Mr Karumi Ibrahim serving as members of the surgical team.
The development comes months after the Damaturu Specialist Hospital successfully carried out a major maxillofacial surgery on a 40-year-old woman diagnosed with mandibular ameloblastoma.
The procedure, conducted in May, involved advanced reconstruction using plates and an iliac crest bone graft.
Medical experts in Yobe State attributed the two breakthroughs to Governor Mai Mala Buni’s commitment to manpower development and the provision of modern equipment and facilities for healthcare institutions across the state.
They noted that YSUTH and Damaturu Specialist Hospital have become the first state-owned medical facilities in the North-East to successfully perform the two specialised surgical procedures.
The experts commended the state government’s investment in healthcare and urged it to sustain the initiative to reduce the need for patients to travel outside the state or country for specialised medical treatment.
