Yobe Gov. withdraws licenses of private schools, pledges to streamline operations

The Yobe State government has decided to cancel the licenses of all private schools in the state.

They want the operators to reapply for new licenses if they are willing to follow the rules and regulations set by the government.

The State Commissioner of Basic and Secondary Education, Dr. Muhammad Sani Idriss, shared this information during a meeting with private school proprietors.

Dr. Idriss emphasized that private schools must align their activities with those of public schools.

Proprietors will no longer be allowed to operate and establish rules that go against the norms and values of the state.

He mentioned that private schools cannot operate without a valid license, and the practice of taking shortcuts in the registration process is no longer acceptable.

Addressing the proprietors, Dr. Idriss explained that the government aims to have complete control over the education system in the state.

He expressed displeasure with the policies of some private schools, which he believes violate the state’s norms and values. Going forward, private schools are expected to operate in harmony with public schools across the state.

Dr. Idriss clarified, “We have canceled the licenses to renew them. Some private schools were licensed with conditions to meet certain standards, but they failed to meet these standards and continue to operate with the licenses.

If you want to run a private school in Yobe State, you must adhere to the rules. That’s why we decided to cancel all the licenses. Reapply within 30 days, and if qualified, you’ll receive a new license.”

He emphasized that no private schools have been closed, but unlicensed ones are not ready to follow the rules.

Parents were also advised to be aware, as the government will communicate with WAEC regarding the license cancellations.

Furthermore, Dr. Idriss mentioned that the state government approved dual curricula in all public schools.

This policy will also be applied in private schools, allowing interested children to memorize the Qur’an and learn Arabic.

Alternatively, students not interested in this option can choose to learn French, ensuring they graduate with at least two languages besides their mother tongue.
