Xenophobia Fears: NANS Demands Swift Protection for Students Abroad

The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has raised alarm over the safety of Nigerians studying in South Africa, urging the Federal Government to act without delay in the face of escalating xenophobic tensions.

In a statement issued on Wednesday by its Vice President for External Affairs, Aneke Kenechukwu, the student body expressed deep concern over growing hostility reportedly directed at foreign nationals, with Nigerians reportedly among the primary targets.

Kenechukwu noted that the trend has created widespread anxiety among Nigerian students, many of whom now live in fear and uncertainty, describing the situation as a national emergency that demands urgent intervention.

He called on the Federal Government to intensify diplomatic engagement with South African authorities to obtain clear assurances regarding the protection of Nigerian citizens, particularly students.

According to him, there is a need to activate relevant diplomatic channels to closely track developments and ensure those responsible for xenophobic attacks are held accountable.

The NANS official also urged the government to roll out emergency assistance measures for affected students, including access to safe accommodation, dedicated emergency communication lines, and financial support where required.

He further proposed a structured evacuation plan for students willing to return to Nigeria, as a precautionary step to reduce their exposure to danger.

“Diplomacy remains the most responsible path, but it must be proactive, firm, and result-oriented. Nigerian lives must not be left to bureaucratic delay,” he said.

Kenechukwu also emphasised the importance of collaboration between government agencies, Nigerian missions abroad, international partners, and NANS to ensure no student is abandoned or left at risk.

He warned that any delay in decisive action could have grave consequences, underscoring the urgency of immediate action.
