Tech giant X, led by Elon Musk, has extended its Community Notes feature to India, just in time for the upcoming general election.
This tool empowers users to add fact-checks and context to posts, aiding in distinguishing truth from falsehoods, particularly crucial during election periods.
Initially introduced in over 69 countries, Community Notes allow select users to contribute by adding informative notes beneath specific posts, aiming to curb the spread of misinformation.
Elon Musk confirmed the launch of this feature in India, highlighting its significance in combating fake news on the platform.
Users meeting specific criteria can apply to become contributors, initially gaining the ability to rate existing notes and eventually creating their own.
This initiative, first launched in December 2022 for text posts, has now expanded to include images and videos, offering a comprehensive approach to combat misinformation.
Interested individuals can apply to be contributors through the official X website, subject to eligibility criteria such as account age, compliance with platform rules, and verification of phone numbers from trusted carriers.
X’s move aligns with broader industry efforts to tackle misinformation, with tech giants like Google and Meta rolling out similar initiatives in India.
Google has introduced fact-checking tools in Hindi, while Meta is leveraging generative AI to identify deep fake content and investing in consumer awareness campaigns, collectively aiming to foster a more informed and secure online environment.
