World Cup: Two Die From Suffocation as Thousands Celebrate Mexico’s Triumph

—

Two people died from suffocation after thousands of football fans crowded the streets of Mexico City to celebrate the country’s victory over Ecuador in the FIFA World Cup, the capital’s health secretariat said on Wednesday.

The incident occurred on Hamburgo and Lancaster streets near the Angel of Independence monument, where large crowds had gathered following Mexico’s 2-0 win over Ecuador in the Round of 32.

The health secretariat said the victims were a 44-year-old man and a 19-year-old woman.

“Despite advanced resuscitation efforts, the deaths of a 44-year-old man and a 19-year-old woman from suffocation were confirmed,” the authority said in a statement posted on social media.
