World Bank Approves $1.75 Billion Funding for Nigeria Amid Growing Debt Worries

Nigeria has secured fresh funding worth $1.75 billion from the World Bank to support key development projects, even as concerns continue to grow over the country’s rising debt profile.

The $1.25 billion under a new six-year Country Partnership Framework spanning 2026 to 2032 and an extra $500 million for the Sustainable Agricultural Value Chains for Growth project, intended to boost agriculture and food security, will help fund the initiative.

The News Chronicle reports that the World Bank stated the new alliance would help 9.5 million farmers through more output and private sector investment; expand electricity access to around 32 million Nigerians; boost broadband coverage for 58 million people; and improve healthcare and diet for 40 million people.

To promote economic changes, draw investment, and generate employment, the lender also accepted the Nigeria Actions for Investment and Jobs Acceleration program.

Though Nigeria’s public debt—which was N159.28 trillion as of end-2025—continues to cause worry, the most recent approval comes notwithstanding. Although the Federal Government claims the debt is still manageable, world financial organizations have often urged caution since the nation keeps funding vital development projects from borrowing.
