Nigerian stand-up comedian Bovi Ugboma recently shared a bold observation—he believes women are in control of Nigeria’s entertainment industry.
During an appearance on the popular TV show Your View, Bovi made the statement, sparking conversation about gender roles in entertainment.
According to Bovi, while women often advocate for equality, some may not realize they’ve already made significant strides in industries like entertainment.
“Women need to understand that in areas where they’re fighting for equality, sometimes they’ve already won,” Bovi said. “But because they’re so used to fighting, they don’t even notice their success.”
He went on to explain that women have long been a driving force in the entertainment industry. Reflecting on the past 10 to 15 years, Bovi pointed out that some of the biggest names and successes in Nigerian entertainment are women.
He mentioned several powerful women in the industry, such as Funke Akindele, whose movie holds the title of the biggest box office hit in Nigeria. Mo Abudu’s work comes in at a close second.
“The biggest producers, like Bolanle Austin-Peters and the talented director Jade Osiberu, have been leading the charge since the days of Kemi Adetiba,” Bovi continued.
He also highlighted the role of Chioma Ude, who founded Nigeria’s biggest film festival.
Bovi emphasized that icons like Omoni Oboli, Uche Jombo, and Genevieve Nnaji are further proof of women’s strong influence in the industry.
“So when I hear young women complain about male producers demanding inappropriate favors for roles, I say, ‘Yes, that’s wrong. But who have you told? You own the industry!’” Bovi remarked, urging women to speak up and support one another in navigating these challenges.
