Comedian Will Ferrell has apologised if he played any role in Jose Mourinho being sacked by Chelsea.

The Anchorman star made a quip about The Special One’s tactics in the months prior to Mourinho being shown the exit at Stamford Bridge.

Accepting an award at the GQ Men of the Year Awards in London last September, Ferrell joked: “Keep playing defence man, keep playing seven guys in the box. I love it, I love it.”

Accepting an award at the GQ Men of the Year Awards in London last September, Ferrell joked: “Keep playing defence man, keep playing seven guys in the box. I love it, I love it.”

Three months later, Mourinho was sacked. It came after the club lost nine of their first 16 games of the season in their bid to defend the Premier League title they had won in May. The decision by Chelsea own Roman Abramovich was blamed at the time on results not being “good enough”.

However, Ferrell feels he may have played a small part.

“I feel like I had a hand in getting Jose Mourinho fired,” Ferrell told US show Men in Blazers. “I made a joke at the GQ awards in London where Mourinho was receiving some sort of special award … and I made a crack like: ‘I love your style, seven men in the box, defensive soccer, keep it going.’ And then next thing you know [he’s fired], I’m so sorry.”

Mourinho remains out of work since his sacking in December but is being tipped to return to management with Manchester United.
