Super Eagles captain, Vincent Enyeama had a phenomenal 2014 but has he done enough to push Yaya Toure off the track to become the best in Africa? Not to mention the Gabonese, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang who is also in strong contention for the most coveted individual prize in African football.
Around this time last year, Chelsea midfielder, John Obi Mikel saw the award slip through his hands as Ivory Coast and Manchester City star, Yaya Toure won it and in less than 48 hours, Vincent Enyeama will know if he’ll be named the best or not.
The last time a Nigerian player was named the best in Africa was in 1999 when Nwankwo Kanu “Papilo” won the award. Enyeama being a goalkeeper, a position that rarely makes it to this stage in most cases, made it to the last three and he’ll hope that he gets the most votes of Head Coaches or the Technical Directors of the National Associations affiliated to CAF who are eligible to vote for the best in Africa.
Yaya Toure looked a strong contender for the award having won it thrice in a row and his performance last season puts him forward as a strong contender.
The Ivorian was instrumental to his English club side Manchester City who lifted the Premier League trophy after he scored 24 goals in the league.
Though Ivory Coast didn’t move beyond the group stage at the 2014 FIFA World Cup, he played in all the three matches the Elephants were involved in at the World Cup.
Enyeama hit the headlines having kept 1,062 minutes without conceding a goal. It looked as if the Nigerian would break Gaetan Huard’s Ligue 1 goalkeeping record, set in 1993, of playing 1,176 minutes without conceding but Enyeama, after keeping a clean sheet for that long in Ligue 1, conceded away to Bordeaux. His consistent performance helped the Super Eagles reach the last sixteen at the 2014 FIFA World Cup.
After he kept Barcelona and Argentina genius Lionel Messi from scoring against the Super Eagles at the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa, both players had another opportunity to face each other in Brazil. Even though he conceded three goals (this time Messi scored against him) his performance at the World Cup was spectacular.
