Following the recent heated argument between the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, and a Navy officer identified as Lieutenant Yarima, Nigerians have continued to express mixed reactions regarding the incident.
During an interview with The News Chronicle on Thursday in Maiduguri, residents and experts shared their views on the matter, emphasizing the importance of mutual respect between politicians and security personnel.
Barrister Dan Lami, a resident of Maiduguri, condemned the constant provocation of security officers by some political leaders. According to him, the military remains a vital pillar in maintaining peace and unity in the country.
He said, “If politicians in Nigeria do not stop provoking security men, especially soldiers, anything can happen because they are the heart of the nation. Without soldiers, there can be no President. Even Wike himself cannot go anywhere without security personnel, so whenever you see them, you must show respect.”
Another resident, who chose to remain anonymous, expressed concern over the growing disregard for military officers by civilians. He questioned the implications of such actions for the country’s future security.
“If civilians can shout at or touch army officers, what does that say about the future of Nigeria’s security?” he asked.
A security expert who also spoke with The News Chronicle urged politicians to respect the rule of law and the hierarchy of the armed forces if they truly want lasting peace and stability in the nation. He warned that undermining the authority of security agencies could weaken the entire national defense structure.
“It is very unfortunate that in a country like Nigeria, politicians sometimes try to control police officers and other security agencies for their personal interests,” the expert said. “Respecting the law and maintaining discipline is the only way to ensure that our security system remains strong.”
The altercation between Minister Wike and Lieutenant Yarima has sparked nationwide discussions about the relationship between political authorities and the military.
Many Nigerians believe that while security officers must remain disciplined, political leaders should also set examples by showing restraint and respect in their dealings with men and women in uniform.
Observers have called on both parties to exercise maturity and prioritize the nation’s stability over personal pride or political rivalry.
The incident serves as a reminder of the delicate balance required to maintain harmony between civilian leadership and the military establishment in Nigeria.
