In a show of dissatisfaction, employees of the Nigerian Postal Service (NIPOST) staged a protest on Monday, contesting the recent appointment of Tola Adeyemi as the new Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the organization.Â
The workers, who took to the streets and shut down the NIPOST headquarters in Abuja, claimed that the appointment was not in their best interest and that Adeyemi lacked the qualifications for the position.
Buba Nehemiah, President of the National Union of Postal and Telecommunication Employees, voiced the concerns of the protesting workers.
He highlighted the accomplishments of the previous CEO, Adeyemi Adepoju, stating that under his leadership, NIPOST successfully cleared its debt, resulting in improved service delivery.
Nehemiah emphasized that they fear a decline in the organization’s performance over the past three years and are determined to prevent its deterioration.
NIPOST, with its workforce of over 13,000 employees, plays a critical role in the country’s postal and communication services. The workers argue that any attempt to undermine the agency’s stability could have adverse implications for national security.
Nehemiah asserted, “The only condition that can make us go back to our office and work is for the appointment that was made last week to be reversed.”
The workers’ protest unfolded shortly after President Bola Tinubu appointed Tola Adeyemi as the new CEO of NIPOST.
This appointment was part of a broader leadership reshuffle for agencies and parastatals within the Ministry of Communications, Innovations, and Digital Economy.
