The Vice Chancellor of Baze University, Professor Abiodun Adeniyi, has said there is always an ounce of temporariness among Nigerians living in the diaspora, accompanied by an enduring desire to return home.
Speaking on the podcast, Conversation with Prof Jideofor , Adeniyi maintained that the sense of temporariness fuels an endless imagination of returning home among many migrants.
“There’s an ounce of temporariness in the average migrant diasporic citizen,” he said.
The university don noted that while entities and individuals have a past, what matters is how that past influences and benefits the present.
Adeniyi, who spoke on the thematic topic, “How Your Village Is Following You: Mobility, Memory and the Mediated Persistence of Belonging,” also argued that communication does not merely serve as a means of exchanging information but plays a significant role in shaping identity.
He, however, lamented that in contemporary times, returning home is increasingly limited to occasions such as burial ceremonies, reflecting the changing nature of migrants’ connections with their places of origin.
