Why Nvidia Is Racing to Control the Future of AI Beyond ChatGPT

NVIDIA and its CEO Jensen Huang are trying to convince investors that the company’s future goes far beyond today’s AI chatbot boom.

The company is still making enormous amounts of money from the artificial intelligence race, but Huang is now pitching Nvidia as a hub for the next generation of AI, including robots, autonomous vehicles, “AI factories,” and systems that can learn independently rather than simply respond to prompts.

One of Huang’s biggest recent claims is that “physical AI” (AI used in robotics and automated machines) could become a massive new business opportunity for Nvidia. He told analysts the company already has the chips, networking, and software needed for that future, saying: “We’ve got it all covered.”

He also described the global expansion of AI data centers as “the largest infrastructure expansion in human history.”

At the same time, Huang is pushing the idea that AI is evolving beyond chatbots. NVIDIA recently backed a British startup called Ineffable Intelligence, founded by former DeepMind researcher David Silver. The startup focuses on reinforcement learning, a type of AI training in which systems learn through trial and error rather than relying mainly on human-written internet data.

Huang called this next stage “superlearners,” saying future AI systems will “learn continuously from experience.” Silver argued the industry must move beyond teaching AI what humans already know and instead build systems that can discover new knowledge on their own.

The partnership is strategically important for Nvidia because advanced AI systems will require even more computing power, increasing demand for Nvidia chips such as its Grace Blackwell processors and the upcoming Vera Rubin AI platform.

Financially, Nvidia is still performing at a historic level.

The company reported quarterly revenue of $81.6 billion, up 85% year-on-year, beating Wall Street expectations. Its data center division alone generated $75.2 billion in sales, showing that demand for AI chips remains extremely strong.

NVIDIA also forecast about $91 billion in revenue for the current quarter and expects to generate more than $370 billion in annual revenue this year, roughly 22 times its level in fiscal 2021.

The company increased its quarterly dividend from one cent to 25 cents per share and announced $80 billion in stock buybacks. That dividend increase sparked controversy online because Huang owns hundreds of millions of Nvidia shares, which means his annual dividend income could rise dramatically.

Despite these strong numbers, investors are becoming harder to impress. NVIDIA’s stock has risen this year, but not as much as some semiconductor rivals, and shares barely moved after the latest earnings report.

Part of the skepticism comes from growing competition. Advanced Micro Devices, Intel, Broadcom, and Alphabet are all developing rival AI chips. Some of Nvidia’s biggest customers are also designing their own processors internally.

NVIDIA is also facing geopolitical pressure. US export restrictions have sharply limited its AI chip sales to China, which Huang says could otherwise become a $50 billion market annually. Although some older Nvidia products are now allowed into China again, the company said it still earns no data center revenue there.

To reduce dependence on a handful of giant cloud companies such as Microsoft, Amazon, and Google, Nvidia says it is diversifying into governments, industrial customers, enterprise AI, CPUs, networking, robotics, and inference computing (the stage where trained AI systems interact with real-world users).

The bottom line is that Nvidia no longer wants to be seen simply as a chipmaker but a foundational platform for the entire AI ecosystem.
