Who will defend the Nigerian Defence Academy?

Just when Nigerians thought they have seen the height of insecurity across the country, the nation’s arch-enemies, bandits, who are being romanced by President Muhammadu Buhari, demonstrated in clear terms that they can do what the Talibans have done in Afghanistan – we hope they don’t succeed.

On Tuesday, in what has gotten tongues wagging across the nation and has become a national debacle, bandits attacked the permanent site of the Nigerian Defence Academy in Kaduna State, killing two officers and abducting one other officer, Major Christopher Datong who was later murdered by his abductors.

For emphasis, the Nigerian Defence Academy is a military university based in Kaduna, Nigeria that trains officer cadets for commissioning into one of the three services of the Nigerian Armed Forces: the Army, the Navy, and the Air Force.

The Spokesman for the academy in the state Major Bashir Muhd Jajira who confirmed the outlandish, lugubrious and egregious incident, said “The security architecture of the Nigerian Defence Academy was compromised early this morning by unknown gunmen”. He added that “We lost two personnel and one was abducted.”

It is imperative to note that The Nigerian Defence Academy is located few metres away from the Federal College of Forestry Mechanization Afaka, in Igabi Local Government Area of Kaduna State, where 39 students were abducted by bandits in March.

By implication, the Nigerian Defence Academy is one of the most sophisticated grounds and one would expect that it cannot be penetrated. But the bandits, who are now more popularly regarded as ‘unknown gunmen’ proved that there is no place beyond their reach across the nation by carrying out a successful attack on the academy – a hard message for Nigerians to swallow. Nigerians have long known that they can only look up to God for defense, but who will defend the Nigerian Defence Academy?  Again, the academy is the foundation of the military and in Biblical terms, ‘When the foundation is destroyed, what will the righteous do?’ Now that the military’s foundation has been compromised, what will Nigerians do? To your tent oh Israel!

This attack is coming on the heels of the multifarious attacks rocking the nation and like every well meaning Nigerians, I am wondering what exactly the interests of the Presidents are. With the continued unabated attacks across the nation particularly in the northern parts of the African giants, I fear that the nation may be on its way to replicate what recently happened in Afghanistan – note that Nigeria is currently ranked 3rd on World Terrorism Index.

It’s worrying that a President, who, at the inception of his tenure averred that he is for no one and for everyone, has by his actions and in-actions, in the last six years demonstrated his undiluted love for those from his region and the peak of wickedness to those from the South and the West. How can we explain it that despite these daily field attacks by these uncircumcised Philistines, President Buhari has refused to proscribe them – rather, the president is romancing them, treating the supposed repented ones to rich dinner and airlifting them in Presidential jets.

By this attack on the academy, the bandits have again, made their intentions clear; they have sent a clear message across the nation; they have shown how grown the monster is now; and more importantly, they have divulged how prepared they are for the coming days.

It’s now left to the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, President Muhammadu Buhari to keep romancing them and watch the nation tear apart or unleash the venom he released on IPOB’s leader, Nnamdi Kanu, Yoruba nation agitator, Sunday Igboho on the bandits. Buhari, what is stopping you from crushing these bandits?
