WHO Partners with TikTok to Fight Health Misinformation

—

The World Health Organization (WHO) has officially announced a partnership with TikTok aimed at providing reliable health information and countering misinformation on the platform.

This collaboration shows the vital role social media plays in shaping health-related behaviors and decisions, particularly among young adults, approximately one-quarter of whom actively seek news content online.

Recognizing the influence of social media, WHO aims to empower individuals to make informed health choices through enhanced health literacy and responsible discourse.

The organization’s Chief Scientist highlighted the necessity of fostering socially responsible platforms to promote accurate health information.

With over 1 billion users, TikTok is committed to leveraging its extensive reach to promote health awareness.

The platform plans to disseminate reliable information through innovative content that addresses stigma and fosters community engagement.

The initiative will tap into WHO’s Fides network of health influencers, mobilizing over 800 creators dedicated to countering misinformation and advocating for evidence-based content.

The partnership will focus on co-creating engaging video content covering various health topics, transforming complex scientific information into easily digestible formats.

Additionally, TikTok will implement specialized training programs for influencers, enhancing their ability to promote credible health information effectively.

This collaboration marks a significant step in addressing the growing concern over misinformation in health, aiming to establish a more informed public and encourage healthier choices.
