WhatsApp Business Adjusts Message Rates to Combat Spam

WhatsApp Business is adjusting its pricing structure for messages in an effort to curb marketing spam and enhance user experience.

Effective August 4, utility message rates will decrease while marketing message rates will increase starting October 4.

This update marks WhatsApp’s first revision of conversation rates since transitioning from flat-rate charging to category-based fees.

The company categorizes messages into Marketing (promotions, new offerings), Utility (order updates, account information), Authentication (OTP), and Service (customer support).

Pricing adjustments vary by region; for instance, in India, marketing rates will rise from $0.0099 to $0.0107 (+8%), whereas utility rates will drop significantly from $0.0042 to $0.0014 (-67%).

These changes are aimed at encouraging businesses to prioritize WhatsApp as a primary communication channel with customers.

Over the past year, concerns over increased messaging and spam have prompted WhatsApp to implement measures to protect users. This includes recent global expansions of guidelines limiting marketing messages based on user engagement metrics.

“WhatsApp is used for a wide range of interactions, from product inquiries to receiving travel documents or promotional offers.

“Our goal is to balance accessibility with a quality messaging experience”, Meta said.
