What to Search With Google AI Overviews and What to Check First

—

Google’s AI search tools save time on some questions but give poor answers to others.

The difference depends on whether the answer is scattered across the web or sits on one page.

Below is a list of things to watch out for:

1. It’s important to use Google’s AI when the information is spread across many sites and needs sorting. Traditional search often sends users through pages that contradict each other or never answer the question. AI tools summarize those pages into short answers, which works well for how-to questions and for finding the best place to go.

The tools also suit questions that need follow-ups. Google’s AI Mode and Gemini let users refine a question over several turns, which regular search does only if the user knows its special commands.

2. Do not use the AI summary when you need a specific page, figure or schedule. Fraudsters also try to game Google’s results, so contact numbers and payment details need extra care.

3. Check the cited links in every case. Google says it is working to make those links more prominent in AI Overviews. If you’re not convinced, you can also scroll past the AI box to the regular results.

4. Another reason for caution comes from research on how AI models explain themselves. Many models show a step-by-step account of their reasoning, known as a chain of thought. A Wall Street Journal report by Christopher Mims says this account is only a summary written by the model, and it may not match how the model reached its answer. Subbarao Kambhampati, a professor of AI at Arizona State University, said training rewards models for reaching the correct answer “no matter how.” His team found that people were more likely to believe a wrong result when a chain of thought came with it.

Pradeep Dasigi, a research scientist at the Allen Institute for AI, said both experts and the public should read these records with more skepticism. Jakub Pachocki, chief scientist at OpenAI, wrote that the company’s ability to rely on chain-of-thought monitoring is “progressively diminishing.” OpenAI said this week it would not release the latest version of its Astra model because of security concerns.

The practical rule is simple. Treat an AI answer as a lead. Confirm any date, number, schedule or contact detail at the original source before you act on it or publish it.
