Excitement is building ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup draw, which takes place this Friday in Washington at 17:00 GMT.
The ceremony promises a glamorous start, complete with musical performances and appearances by global celebrities, before the official draw begins. Former England defender Rio Ferdinand will oversee the process, supported by well-known sports icons and broadcasters.
Ahead of the draw, organisers have prepared an extended programme that includes speeches from FIFA President Gianni Infantino and United States President Donald Trump. Once the entertainment and formalities end, attention will shift to the main event, where 48 teams will be placed into 12 groups.
The News Chronicle understands that FIFA has introduced a carefully controlled draw system designed to prevent early clashes between world football’s highest-ranked teams and manage the complexities that come with having multiple confederations.
Teams have been placed into four pots based on their FIFA World Ranking. Co-hosts Mexico, Canada and the United States already occupy the first position in Groups A, B and D to ensure they play all their fixtures on home soil.
The rest of the teams will be drawn pot by pot, with a FIFA computer system making sure there are no breaches of confederation rules. Only European teams are allowed to share groups due to their large number.
A special seeding rule applies to Spain, Argentina, France and England, the top four teams in the world.
They will be separated into different segments of the knockout bracket to keep the possibility of blockbuster semifinal or final encounters alive.
However, this advantage only holds if they finish as group winners.
