Former Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Prof Attahiru Jega, has stated that the commission under the leadership Mahmood Yakubu is indebted to Nigerians on explanation for the failure of the INEC Result Viewing Portal (IReV) and the Bimodal Voter Registration Systems (BVAS) used in the 2023 general elections.
Speaking on a Channels Television, the former INEC boss alleged that overzealous politicians invaded the two technological systems set up by the Commission for the accreditation and electronic transmission of votes during the 2023 general poll.
Jega maintained that in 2023, INEC did its best under very complex conditions and a lot of these difficult conditions were led by the mindset of some selfish politicians who wanted to coast to victory by all means possible.
He said that despite the Commission’s lavish use of technology to ensure transparency and integrity in the process of election results as initiated since 2011 till date, headstrong politicians were always bent on taking a step ahead of the Commission in all electioneering years.
Jega stated that politicians also use ways and means to not only truncate but as well bypass something that has actually been introduced lawfully to give the electoral process a good level of integrity.
The ex-Chairman of the Commission who opined strongly that INEC needs to tell Nigerians more about what happened with the IReV added that, at some point, he had called for a detailed public inquiry about what transpired with regards to IReV.
He emphasized further that in spite of the confidence and the very reassuring manner the INEC chairman (Mahmood Yakubu) had spoken about the IReV, something must have happened for the process to fail.
“I believe that some of our reckless politicians may have infiltrated it and truncated it but INEC will take the blame for that. We need to go back to the bottom of what happened with the IReV”. He stated.
