The chairman, Northern States Governors Forum (NSGF) and Governor of Niger state, Babangida Aliyu yesterday, called on his colleagues to recognise his Rivers state counterpart, Rotimi Chibuike Amaechi as the legitimate Chairman of Nigerian Governors Forum (NGF).
Aliyu who spoke in Bida during the turbaning ceremony of his deputy, Ahmed Ibeto as the Wali Raya Karsa Nupe by Etsu Nupe Alhaji Yahaya Abubaka, said Gov. Amaechi on the 27th of May was elected chairman of the Forum by 19 out of the 35 Governors under the NGF fold against the 16 votes secured by the Plateau state Governor, Jonah Jang.
Governor Aliyu stated that the forum in a unified voting elected the person that would lead them who emerged as Governor Chibuike Amaechi. He therefore wondered why some people would make moves towards tarnishing their colleagues’ image.
His words: “We were united and elected a chairman. The fact is, we must recognize Governor Amaechi as Nigeria Governors’ Forum Chairman.”
Aliyu discredited claims by the Plateau state Governor, Jonah Jang that the NSGF abandoned him after he was adopted as the consensus candidate for NGF chair.
He stressed that although the Northern Governors Forum adopted Jang prior to the NGF election, the people’s wish and democracy triumphed over the arrangement at the poll.
Governor Aliyu who noted that there is a need to solve the problem created in NGF as the body cannot go into 2015 election as a divided house also advised his colleagues, especially those from the North, saying: “we must articulate our position as a state, region and as a people. Whoever offers us the best we will go with him, that is beauty of democracy – recognizing the equality of other people.”
While giving a brief remark during the ceremony, Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Sa´ad Abubakar advised leaders to always strive for the good of the common man and avoid any form of molestation.
