When asked about the difficulty of winning the UEFA Euros compared to the Copa America, Argentina head coach Lionel Scaloni expressed confidence in his team’s abilities.
Scaloni suggested that the Argentina national team could win the UEFA Euros, adding that he would like to see a European national team participate in the Copa America someday.
Scaloni mentioned that Argentina faced several teams that reached the semifinals of the Euros during the 2022 FIFA World Cup, and found those matches manageable:
“I don’t think one competition is more difficult than the other,” Scaloni said. “We faced some important teams in the World Cup that have now advanced to the semifinals of the Euros, and it went well for us. But that doesn’t necessarily mean we could go to the European Championship and win it.”
“Or maybe we could,” he added.
“I think the level is very balanced. I would like to see a European team invited to the Copa America to experience it, and vice versa. But that would essentially be a World Cup, so the difficulty is similar. There isn’t much difference, really. But these are just opinions.”
Despite losing their first group game to Saudi Arabia, Argentina defied the odds to win the 2022 FIFA World Cup by defeating France in the final.
Scaloni, 46, had an extensive playing career in Europe with nearly 400 club appearances.
Although he only earned seven caps for Argentina between 2003 and 2006, he has received numerous coaching accolades, including the IFFHS Men’s World’s Best National Coach in 2022 and 2023, the Best FIFA Men’s Coach in 2022, and the South American Coach of the Year in 2022.
