We Could Have Prolonged Emergency Rule if We Wanted— Wike

Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has declared that the state of emergency in Rivers would still be in force if he had wished it to continue.

Speaking on Channels Television hours after President Bola Tinubu lifted the six-month emergency rule on Thursday, Wike accused certain individuals of deliberately fueling unrest in the state for personal gain.

“I was watching on television today; there are people who are natural crisis builders who think they can only benefit when there is a crisis,” Wike said.

“If we don’t want this state of emergency to be lifted, we would have done one or two things to ensure that it continues.” He added.

The former Rivers governor also revealed that he had spoken with Governor Siminalayi Fubara, stressing that peace has now returned.

Meanwhile, The News Chronicle observed that Fubara has yet to resume duties at Government House as of Thursday, marking the official end of Tinubu’s controversial emergency rule, which had drawn widespread condemnation as unconstitutional.
