Wayne Rooney is Officially Man United Captain

Manchester United manager, Louis van Gaal has officially appointed Wayne Rooney as the captain of the club.

Rooney had been the crowned prince to the Manchester United throne since the days of Sir Alex Ferguson and the England international had captain the side through most of their pre-season games following the departure of former skipper, Nemanja Vidic who left the side for Inter Milan at the end of last season.

Van Gaal also appointed Darren Fletcher as the vice-captain, a move which surprised most observers as it has been expected that Robin van Persie lead the team alongside Rooney.

“For me it’s always very important the choice of captain. Wayne has shown a great attitude towards everything he does. I have been very impressed by his professionalism and his attitude to training and to my philosophy. He is a great inspiration to the younger members of the team and I believe he will put his heart and soul into his captaincy role.

“Darren Fletcher will become the vice-captain. Darren is a natural leader and will captain the team when Wayne isn’t playing. Darren is a very experienced player and a very popular member of the dressing room, I know he will work well alongside Wayne,” Van Gaal said after United’s 2-1 win against Valencia at a pre-season friendly played at Old Trafford on Tuesday night.
