Wahab Apologises to Lagos Residents Over Mounting Waste Challenge

The Lagos State Government has apologized to residents over persistent waste management challenges, assuring them that measures are underway to restore cleanliness and improve the state’s waste disposal system.

The Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Mr Tokunbo Wahab, gave the assurance in a statement reposted on his official X handle on Friday following an interview on ARISE Television.

“We had a challenge, and we are fixing it,” Wahab said, acknowledging the concerns raised by residents over waste collection across the state.

The commissioner explained that Lagos was undergoing a major transition from its traditional linear waste management system to a circular economy model that treats waste as a valuable resource rather than refuse.

According to him, the new strategy aims to promote environmental sustainability while unlocking economic opportunities through waste recycling and resource recovery.

As part of the reforms, Wahab disclosed that the state had commissioned a food waste digester at Ikosi to convert organic waste into clean energy.

He said the project, funded and piloted by C-40, aligns with the state’s long-term vision of building a sustainable and climate-resilient waste management system.

Wahab noted that the initiative is part of the Lagos State Government’s broader efforts to modernize waste management infrastructure, reduce environmental pollution, and improve sanitation across communities.

He reaffirmed the government’s commitment to strengthening waste management operations and ensuring cleaner, healthier neighborhoods for all residents.
