The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has dismissed a viral letter circulating online which claimed that security personnel would be deployed to examination centres for the ongoing 2026 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) for school candidates.
In a statement issued by its spokesperson, Moyosola Adesina on Saturday, WAEC described the document as fake, insisting it was not released by the examination body and was designed to mislead the public and create confusion during the examination period.
The council clarified that the letter did not originate from the office of the Senior Deputy Registrar in charge of Test Administration or any department within WAEC Nigeria.
According to WAEC, no directive has been issued authorising the deployment of security officers to individual examination centres nationwide.
The fake letter, reportedly dated May 27, 2026, was allegedly addressed to school owners and principals across the country. It falsely claimed that arrangements had been concluded for officers of the Nigeria Police Force and the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) to be stationed at examination centres from June 1.
WAEC further noted that the forged document carried a fake signature in the name of the Senior Deputy Registrar and Head of Test Administration, S.D. Kum, in an attempt to make it appear authentic.
The council accused those responsible for the publication of attempting to deceive school administrators, parents, and candidates, while creating unnecessary anxiety over the conduct of the ongoing examinations.
WAEC urged school authorities, supervisors, invigilators, parents, and members of the public to disregard the letter, stressing that it should not be treated as an official communication from the examination body.
“The Management of the West African Examinations Council wishes to state categorically that the said letter is fake, as it did not emanate from the office of the Senior Deputy Registrar (Test Administration) or any other department within WAEC Nigeria,” the council stated.
The examination body also advised stakeholders to rely solely on its official communication channels for verified information concerning the conduct of the 2026 WASSCE.
