The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has refuted claims circulating in some media outlets that it issued directives restricting Senior Secondary students to specific subjects for the forthcoming 2026 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) for School Candidates.
According to a press release by WAEC made available to The News Chronicle, the Council described the reports as “unfounded assumptions” and categorically distanced itself from the alleged directive.
The statement, issued by its Public Affairs Department at its Yaba headquarters, clarified that WAEC does not develop or regulate school curricula, as this function falls under the jurisdiction of the Federal Government of Nigeria.
“WAEC hereby affirms that the Council did not issue any such directive(s) nor restrict the choice of students to offer any particular subject(s) for WASSCE (SC) 2026 as alleged,” the statement read.
The Council emphasized that its role is limited to implementing government education policies through assessment and that any changes or modifications to school curricula are the sole responsibility of the government.
WAEC urged schools, stakeholders, and the general public to disregard the misleading reports and rely only on verified information obtained directly from the Council. It reassured parents and students of its commitment to upholding excellence and fairness in the administration of its examinations.
“We assure our stakeholders that WAEC remains dedicated to professionalism and excellence in the assessment of the Nigerian child,” the statement added, confirming that all candidates presenting themselves for the 2026 WASSCE will be afforded fair and standard evaluation.
The statement was signed by Moyosola Adesina, Acting Head of Public Affairs, WAEC, on behalf of the Head of National Office.
