VP Kashim Shettima Visits Maiduguri to Mourn Soldiers Killed in Benisheikh Attack

Vice President Kashim Shettima has visited Maiduguri, the capital of Borno State, to commiserate with the Nigerian Army and the state government following a recent attack on troops in Benisheikh that claimed the lives of officers and soldiers, including Brigadier General Oseni Braimah.
The condolence visit, made on behalf of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, was disclosed in a statement by the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Communications, Stanley Nkwocha.
Speaking during the visit, Shettima described the fallen soldiers as heroes who paid the ultimate price in service to the nation. He emphasized that their sacrifice highlighted the heavy cost of maintaining peace and security.
“These men wore the uniform for all of us. They stood to protect our communities, our families, and the future of our children. Their courage reminds us that peace and security often come at a very heavy cost,” he said.
He also reassured Nigerians of continued federal support, adding that criminals would have no hiding place under President Tinubu’s administration.
The visit followed a deadly midnight assault on a military base in Benisheikh, where suspected fighters from Boko Haram and the Islamic State West Africa Province reportedly launched coordinated attacks on multiple military positions around 12:30 a.m. on Thursday.
The attackers were said to have advanced in large numbers, targeting at least three formations before moving toward nearby civilian communities.
A surviving soldier described the assault as unusually intense and well-coordinated, suggesting that the attackers appeared to have studied military positions beforehand.
