Many people are feared killed and properties destroyed following a violent clash between security operatives and residents of Katai and Fauda villages in Wudil Local Government Area of Kano State.
The crisis reportedly began over a land dispute between villagers and a Fulani traditional leader, who claimed land belonging to indigenous Hausa families. Tensions escalated after villagers refused to relinquish the land.
Eyewitnesses said armed men, believed to be security operatives dressed in mufti, stormed the villages at night, opening fire and causing panic.
Residents, thinking they were bandits, mobilized with local weapons, leading to a confrontation in which one villager was shot.
Villagers reportedly overpowered and killed one of the attackers, later identified as a security operative. This triggered reprisal operations by security forces, resulting in additional casualties and the burning of homes, forcing many to flee.
The Chairman of Wudil LGA, Abba Muhammad Tukur, confirmed the incident, calling it tragic, and assured residents that investigations are ongoing and justice will be served.
