The management of Nnamdi Azikiwe University (UNIZIK), Awka, has dismissed reports linking the institution to a viral video showing a university official allegedly caught in a compromising situation with a student, describing the claims as false and misleading.
In a statement issued by the university’s Director of Information and Public Relations, Comrade Aloysius Emeka Attah, the institution said its investigations confirmed that neither the incident nor the individuals involved had any connection with UNIZIK.
The viral video showed a half-naked man clutching his clothes while hiding in a bush. Social media users alleged that he had been caught engaging in sexual activity with a student inside a Biology laboratory and, when confronted, allegedly jumped through a window into a nearby farm to escape.
However, the university said the alleged incident did not occur on its campus and that the man featured in the video is not a member of its staff.
The institution further stated that none of its staff or students were involved in the incident in any way.
“The report is not only false but misleading. After due verification, it has been established that the incident did not happen at Nnamdi Azikiwe University. The man seen in the viral video is also not a staff member of Nnamdi Azikiwe University,” the statement read.
The management reiterated that the university upholds high standards of professionalism and discipline among its staff and students, and has zero tolerance for any exploitation or misconduct.
It added that it would not allow false information to tarnish the institution’s reputation.
The university also expressed concern over the growing spread of misinformation and disinformation through social media and citizen journalism, attributing the trend to the rush by some platforms to break news and attract online traffic.
While acknowledging that digital communication has made fact-checking easier, the management urged media organisations, bloggers and members of the public to verify information before publication.
It also called on those responsible for circulating the false reports to retract and correct them, while encouraging journalists to seek clarification from the appropriate authorities before publishing stories.
