In a groundbreaking achievement for Bayer Leverkusen, the team clinched the Bundesliga title for the first time in their 120-year history, ending Bayern Munich’s 11-year dominance with a decisive 5-0 win against Werder Bremen yesterday.

Under the guidance of manager Xabi Alonso, Leverkusen needed a victory to secure the championship with five games to go and responded with a performance worthy of champions, pushing their unbeaten streak to 43 matches in all competitions.

The scoring was led by a hat-trick from Florian Wirtz, with additional goals from Victor Boniface and Granit Xhaka completing the rout. However, despite playing a crucial role in Leverkusen’s success this season, Nigerian striker Victor Boniface was quick to share the credit. “I no lead anybody ooo. We lead ourselves,” he posted on the social media platform X on Monday, highlighting the team’s united effort.

Boniface’s contributions have been significant; he opened the scoring with a penalty in the 25th minute and later assisted Xhaka’s goal, bringing his season totals to 11 goals and nine assists in only 18 Bundesliga matches, an impressive feat given a four-month injury absence.

Alonso reflected on the significance of the victory, stating, “This is a very special moment for the club. Winning the Bundesliga for the first time in 120 years is something very special. The players are top. I am very proud of everyone.”

With the league title now secured, Leverkusen is poised to make further history. They aim to complete the season unbeaten in the Bundesliga and continue their pursuit of an unprecedented treble, remaining contenders in both the DFB-Pokal and UEFA Europa League.
