Van Gaal Blasts UEFA Over Champions League Format

—

Former Netherlands manager Louis van Gaal has criticised UEFA over the revamped Champions League format, accusing the European football governing body of prioritising financial gains over the quality of the competition.
Van Gaal expressed dissatisfaction with the expanded format, arguing that the tournament has become too accessible and no longer adequately reflects its status as a competition for Europe’s finest clubs.
“It’s ridiculous that UEFA came up with this competition format. Nowadays, anyone can participate. UEFA only thinks about making money. It’s a corrupt world,” the Dutchman said.
The former Manchester United and Barcelona manager insisted that the Champions League should feature only the strongest teams, arguing that a more selective competition would produce better football and matches of a higher standard.
“It’s called the Champions League, isn’t it? The best teams should be playing in it. There would be fewer differences in quality and fewer goals, but the matches would be of a much higher standard and the football would be much better,” he added.
Van Gaal’s comments were shared on Facebook by football transfer journalist Fabrizio Romano, bringing renewed attention to the debate over UEFA’s decision to expand the competition.
The Champions League adopted a new format in the 2024/25 season, replacing the traditional group stage with a 36-team league phase. Under the system, each club plays eight matches against different opponents, with the standings determining which teams advance directly to the round of 16 and which must contest the knockout play-offs.
While the revamped structure provides more fixtures and additional opportunities for clubs to compete at Europe’s highest level, Van Gaal’s criticism reflects concerns that commercial interests are increasingly shaping the direction of elite football.
