Van Dijk Hits Back at Rooney’s Leadership Criticism Amid Liverpool’s Struggles

Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk has dismissed Wayne Rooney’s remarks questioning the team’s leadership during their recent poor run, describing the comments as “lazy criticism.”

Rooney, in his podcast last week, blamed a lack of leadership from Van Dijk and Mohamed Salah for Liverpool’s dip in form after a strong start to the 2025/26 Premier League campaign. The Reds, who began the season with five straight wins, have since stumbled, losing four consecutive league matches before a rebound victory against Aston Villa.

Speaking after the win, Van Dijk responded firmly, insisting that such remarks overlook the collective effort within the squad. “I didn’t hear him last year when things were going well,” the Dutch defender said. “He’s a legend of the game, and I respect him, but those comments are lazy. We win and lose together, and everyone is doing their best to turn things around.”

The News Chronicle gathered that Van Dijk’s remarks reflect the unity within Liverpool’s camp despite mounting external pressure on manager Arne Slot. Sources around Anfield reveal that the players remain confident in Slot’s leadership and are focused on regaining their winning rhythm ahead of a decisive week that includes clashes against Real Madrid and Manchester City.

Rooney, however, stood by his statement while acknowledging Van Dijk’s brilliance over the years. “I respect Virgil; he’s been one of the best defenders in the world. But this season, he hasn’t reached his usual standards, and that’s my honest opinion,” the former England star explained.

Liverpool currently sit third in the Premier League, seven points behind leaders Arsenal. Van Dijk, however, believes the Reds will recover through teamwork and determination. “We’re not a club that reacts rashly,” he said. “As long as we stay humble, keep believing, and work hard, we’ll find our way back.”
