A Nigerian man serving in the United States Army has questioned how Nigerians earning as little as N100,000 monthly manage to cope with the rising cost of living in the country.
The man, who spoke during a livestream, said he is often surprised when he hears about the salaries earned by some Nigerians, particularly those who have families to support.
According to him, the rising prices of food, fuel and other essential commodities make it difficult for him to understand how workers earning relatively low wages are able to meet their monthly needs.
He said he frequently asks Nigerians about their earnings during his livestreams and has encountered people earning about N800,000 monthly while supporting families with two or three children.
“Sometimes when I do my livestream, I ask people questions, you know, how much do you earn and stuff, they will say like N800,000. And sometimes these people have families, like two kids, three kids,” he said.
The US-based Nigerian also compared the Nigerian and American wage systems, noting that workers in Nigeria generally receive their salaries monthly, while some workers in the United States may receive their earnings more frequently.
He therefore questioned how Nigerians earning around N100,000 manage to cover their expenses from one month to another, particularly amid the increasing cost of basic necessities.
His comments have drawn attention to the financial pressures facing low-income households in Nigeria, where many families continue to adjust their spending and seek additional sources of income to cope with rising living costs.
