UPDATE: Murder of Seven in Kano – Police Arrest Nephew, Two Others

The Kano State Police Command has arrested three principal suspects in connection with the gruesome murder of a housewife and her six children in Dorayi Chiranchi Quarters, Kano, and has linked them to an earlier killing of two women in Tudun Yola area of the metropolis.
In a statement issued on Sunday, the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), CSP Abdullahi Haruna Kiyawa, said the suspects were apprehended through intelligence-led operations carried out under the supervision of the Commissioner of Police, CP Ibrahim Adamu Bakori.
According to the statement, the arrests followed a sting operation conducted between 10:00pm on Saturday, January 17, and 4:00am on Sunday, January 18, 2026.
The suspects were identified as Umar Auwalu, 23, of Sabuwar Gandu Quarters; Isyaku Yakubu, also known as Chebe, 40, of Sagagi Quarters; and Yakubu Abdulaziz, popularly called Wawo, 21, of Sabon Gida Sharada Quarters.
Police disclosed that Umar Auwalu, alleged to be the leader of the syndicate and a nephew of the murdered housewife, confessed to carrying out the Dorayi Chiranchi killings during interrogation.
“The leader of the syndicate, Umar Auwalu, a nephew to the deceased housewife, confessed to the crime and also admitted that the same syndicate carried out a series of gruesome killings and attacks in recent times, including the killing and burning of two housewives at Tudun Yola Quarters, Kano,” the statement said.
The Tudun Yola incident, which occurred weeks earlier, had sparked public outrage and heightened concerns over rising violent crimes in parts of Kano metropolis.
Items recovered from the suspects include four blood-stained clothes, two mobile phones belonging to the deceased, a cutlass, a club, an undisclosed sum of money allegedly stolen from the Dorayi Chiranchi scene, and other dangerous weapons.
The police said investigations are ongoing and assured residents that all those involved in the crimes will be brought to justice.
The Command also commended officers involved in the operation and thanked members of the public for their prayers, support, and cooperation, reaffirming its commitment to safeguarding lives and property across Kano State.
