Universal Music Group Reshuffles Leadership as $270 Million Savings Drive Continues

—

Universal Music Group (UMG) has launched another round of leadership changes across its United States and European operations as the music giant pursues a $270 million annual cost reduction target.

The restructuring, reported by Music Business Worldwide on October 14, 2026, forms part of a programme introduced in February 2024 and scheduled to run through 2027. Among those affected is Nigerian American music executive Tunji Balogun, who is expected to exit his role as Chief Executive Officer of Def Jam Recordings before the end of 2026.

Other departures include senior executives at Interscope Geffen A&M, Polydor Label Group and Universal Music’s UK operations. The changes also extend to Ireland, following recent workforce adjustments in Germany and Canada.

The News Chronicle reports that the latest developments highlight the difficult balance facing major record labels as they seek to improve efficiency while adapting to changes in music consumption, technology and global competition. Despite the restructuring, UMG reported first quarter 2026 revenue of €2.9 billion, supported by streaming, physical sales and acquisitions.

UMG has also strengthened its African presence through its majority stake acquisition in Mavin Records, the Nigerian label associated with artists including Rema and Ayra Starr.

The company recorded €90 million in savings in 2025 and expects further reductions through 2027. However, its adjusted EBITDA margin fell to 20.5% in the second quarter of 2026, from 22.7% a year earlier.
