UNIMAID Denies Alleged Links Between Students and Boko Haram Terrorists

The University of Maiduguri (UNIMAID) has dismissed as false and misleading a viral video alleging that some of its students were arrested for collaborating with Boko Haram insurgents.

In a press release obtained by The News Chronicle on Tuesday, January 13, 2026, and signed by the Registrar, Ahmad A. Lawan, the university management described the claims circulating on social media as baseless, mischievous, and without any factual foundation.

According to the statement, no student of the University of Maiduguri has been found to have links with Boko Haram insurgents or any similar extremist group. The management stressed that the institution has never tolerated extremism or violence in any form.

UNIMAID noted that it has consistently been at the forefront of efforts to counter violent extremism, promote peace, and support national security initiatives, particularly in the North-East region. It added that its staff and students are law-abiding, disciplined, and focused on academic pursuits.

The university urged parents, guardians, and members of the public to disregard the misinformation and refrain from spreading the false narrative, warning that such reports could have negative consequences.

The management reaffirmed its commitment to academic excellence, moral discipline, peace, security, and national unity.
