The United Nations has sounded a grave warning, urging the United States and Israel to halt their ongoing airstrikes on Iran before the crisis descends into chaos.
Speaking amid mounting tensions, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres cautioned that the situation risks spiralling beyond control if urgent steps are not taken. He also called on Iran to refrain from targeting neighbouring Gulf nations that have not been directly involved in the conflict spreading across the Middle East.
Guterres highlighted the growing humanitarian toll of the military operations, stressing that civilians, particularly in poorer countries, are bearing the brunt of the fallout. According to him, disruptions in energy supply and surging global prices could have “tragic consequences” for vulnerable populations.
Recent exchanges between Iran and Israel have extended to critical energy facilities, including natural gas installations across the Gulf region, triggering sharp increases in energy costs worldwide.
The tensions have further drawn international concern over threats to maritime activities, especially in the strategic Strait of Hormuz, a key route for global oil shipments. Several nations have appealed to Tehran to cease attacks and intimidation targeting vessels in the corridor.
Reinforcing this stance, the UN chief urged Iran: “Stop attacking your neighbours; they were never parties to the conflict.
“The Security Council has condemned these attacks,” and has also ordered the reopening of the Strait.
“The prolonged closure of the Strait of Hormuz causes enormous pain in so many people around the world that have nothing to do with this conflict,” Guterres urged.
“It’s time for the force of the law to prevail over the law of force. It’s time for diplomacy to prevail over war,” the UN chief said.
