The UK Government has awarded 68 Nigerians Chevening and Commonwealth scholarships to pursue master’s and PhD programs in various fields in the United Kingdom in 2026.
The British High Commission disclosed this in a statement on Wednesday, noting that pre-departure ceremonies were held for the scholars in Abuja and Lagos.
According to the mission, 12 Nigerians secured Chevening scholarships, while 56 others have so far received Commonwealth scholarships.
Chargée d’Affaires of the British High Commission in Abuja, Ms Vicky Seymour, congratulated the scholars for emerging successful from the highly competitive application and interview process.
“Chevening and Commonwealth Scholars have bright futures, and we see their time in the UK not only as an investment in them as individuals, but also in the future of Nigeria,” she said.
Seymour urged the scholars to return to Nigeria with the knowledge and experience gained during their studies and use them to contribute to the country’s development.
“On your return to Nigeria, I know you will go on to do great things, just as your alumni have done before you,” she added.
One of the Chevening scholars, Sarah Nathaniel Yanayork, who will study International Human Rights Law at the University of Essex, described her selection as a major milestone after three years of resilience, personal growth and commitment to social change.
Yanayork said the scholarship offered more than academic opportunities, describing it as a platform to build international networks, engage in volunteer activities and return to Nigeria better equipped to promote good governance and inclusive development.
“This honour is not just a personal milestone; it is fuel for a lifelong dedication to human rights and community transformation,” she said.
Another scholar, Abubakar Umar, who will study Special Educational Needs at the University of Exeter under the Commonwealth Scholarship, described the award as particularly meaningful because he lives with hearing impairment.
Umar said his scholarship represented a step towards promoting more inclusive systems and opportunities.
“From an inclusive application to an inclusive post-selection process.
“A journey of resilience and inclusivity has just begun,” he said.
The News Agency of Nigeria reports that Nigeria has a strong alumni network, with more than 5,237 Nigerians having benefited from the Chevening and Commonwealth scholarship programmes.
Applications for the 2027/2028 Chevening and Commonwealth scholarships are now open, and prospective applicants are encouraged to apply through the respective scholarship platforms.
